Girls in STEM

Empowering girls through Science, Technology, Engineering and Math

The Discovery Place Girls in STEM program connects young women to science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) to inspire a life-long interest in fields where women have historically been underrepresented. Through workshops, classes, camps, festivals and mentorship designed to foster critical thinking and problem solving skills, girls encounter real-world challenges and develop solutions.

Girls in STEM Make Series allows students to design, prototype, innovate and create through a series of themed workshops. Through a series of hands-on learning that focuses on creativity, critical thinking and communication, young women will experience STEM in an exciting and collaborative environment.

The upcoming Girls in STEM Make Series – Digital Fabrication is designed to introduce students to the materials, machinery and techniques of design and print. Participants will gain hands-on experience using a 3D printer, CNC router, laser cutter and other tools as they explore the design process using advanced software and technology.

The programs that Discovery Place provides through Girls in STEM not only expose girls to a variety of STEM topics and career paths but fosters an environment of growth and exploration. The girls can experiment, push past their comfort zones and build their self-confidence in areas of interest. I love to see the girls have an 'AHA' moment when connections are drawn between either past experiences or current topics of curiosity.
